Economically, Economy of Jakarta plays several functions. To the south a road and railway join Jakarta with Bogor, Sukabumi, and Bandung. To the west a railway and the road runs to Banten and also at the harbour in Merak, which can be connected by ferry to Lampung in Sumatra.
The port of Tanjung Priok in Jakarta is the biggest in Indonesia, handling exports in West Java and a huge proportion of Indonesia’s import trade, many products are transshipped to other islands or harbors. Jakarta is served by several international airlines, by Garuda Indonesian Airways, also from other domestic airlines. The town’s main international airfield is located about 12 kilometers in the west at Cengkareng, and a smaller facility is only to the southeast. The central bus terminal, located at Lapangan Banteng, serves all city, intercity and regional bus lines, there is also suburb bus terminals in Jatinegara, Kebayoran, Grogol, Kota, and Tanjung Priok.
The main train stations are in Kota and in Gambir at Medan Merdeka, Pasar Senen from the east, and Manggarai and Jatinegara from the south. Tanah Abang serves the traffic and west to Merak. Traffic jams occur especially throughout the morning and mid-day rush hours. Public transport from the city is by bus or minibus. The becak, or tricycle taxi cab, is used only for local neighbor transport and regular taxis currently operate during the metropolitan area.
